Spring 2027 · Registration open

Taking Calculus II? Add the interdisciplinary, one-credit lab.

MA 16290: The Data Science Labs on Calculus turns the mathematics in MA 16200 or MA 16600 into Python code, sensor data, and working hardware.

  • No previous programming required
  • Hands-on weekly projects
  • Honors-contract option
Ultrasonic distance sensor, Raspberry Pi Pico, LEDs, and wiring on a breadboard
Build a distance-measurement tool, collect real data, and analyze it with calculus and numerical methods.

Interested in honors?

Eligible students may use MA 16290 to support an honors contract in MA 16200 or MA 16600. The lab adds an interdisciplinary project experience without replacing the paired Calculus II course. College procedures and approval requirements apply.

Build it. Measure it. Model it.

Build with hardware

Connect sensors, a microprocessor, LEDs, and other components.

Collect real data

Use Python and Jupyter notebooks to measure physical systems.

Analyze with calculus

Use derivatives, integrals, limits, numerical methods, and error analysis to explain what the measurements mean.
